Where to get A3949, how to replace it?
June 28, 2010 06:38PM
Hi!

i wanted to buy the A3949 for my extruder controller but i could not find a source for it.

It seems like Production ended because of low value, so how can i get one or how can i repalce it?

Thank you

To use one of these, you would have to redesign the PCB layout, so it's probably quite a lot of hassle. If you want to do that anyway, I'd recommend to go for the official replacement part, the A3950 (smaller package).

Here. It looks like A3950 is the newer version of A3949.

As far as I can tell, this chip is not used in electronics more recent than Gen3. You could save yourself a lot of pain by switching to something more recent.

Failing that, there was a Gen3+ board which replaced the extruder controller with a daughter card that mounts to the sanguino header on the main board. Its built to drive a modern stepper extruder, which the original extruder controlled can only run in full step mode, and it can run a heated bed which I don't think the basic Gen3 can. This will also allow you to use modern firmware.
