So I understand how the laser cutters work but what specs would the laser diode have to be to cut clear acyrlic around 3-4mm thick. I have about a $300 dollar budget for this project. I get that diodes don't work well on clear acrylic, but I'm not sure where to look for some guidance.

... for clear acrylic with 4mm thickness you'll need a CO2-laser with at least 10Watts of power -- but the cheap chinese glass-tube-lasers starts at 40 Watts.

Search in fleabay for "CO2 laser" ...
