Fantastic Work Radian
You can get PWM out of the FAN 0 FET. For example if you set the fan speed using M106 SNNN from 0-255.
Cheers

Hi Jelle, thanks for the pointers to those Gcode generators. The firmware for the duet controller syncs the fan output to extrusion moves so I'm already covered. As for power control, I didn't expect it to work so well as it does with a fixed (no PWM) power level. The kinematics of the duet firmware seems to maintain a constant velocity regardless of head travel - as far as I can tell by lasering card at low power and carefully inspecting the results.Quote

On the firmware side I think you need a way to control the laser. It is probably best to hijack the E coordinate for that, as it already is moving in sync with the other axes, so it is not that hard to implement ppi or ppm (pulses per inch/mm). One thing cheap lasers usually get wrong is the 'corner power': the laser power stays constant and removes more material in the corner when decelerating/accelerating.
But how far did you get with this project?
