Principle And Classification Of Metal Laser Cutting

Metal laser cutting is one of the important applications of laser technology. With the development of fiber laser technology, metal laser cutting has gradually become the main market for laser applications, and metal laser cutting machine has gradually become the main force to replace traditional metal cutting machines.

In fact, the cutting process of metal laser cutting machine is essentially different from that of traditional machining machine tools.Metal laser cutting is to irradiate the laser beam on the surface of the metal workpiece, and achieve the purpose of cutting or carving by melting and evaporating the metal workpiece.

Laser cutting has many advantages, such as accurate, fast, unlimited mode, material saving, smooth end face, and low comprehensive processing cost.

From the original division, metal laser cutting can be divided into the following categories:

1、Vaporization Cutting

High energy density laser beam is used to heat the workpiece. Vaporize in a short time to form steam. Make a cut in the material.

The heat of vaporization of materials is generally large, so large power and power density are required for laser vaporization cutting.

2、Melting Cutting

During laser melting and cutting, the metal material is melted by laser heating, and the nozzle is sprayed with non oxidizing gas (Ar, He, N, etc.). The liquid metal is discharged by the strong pressure of the gas to form a cut.

The required energy is only 1/10 of that for vaporization cutting. Laser melting cutting is mainly used for cutting materials or active metals that are not easy to be oxidized, such as stainless steel, titanium, aluminum and their alloys.

3、Oxygen Cutting

It uses laser as preheating heat source and active gas such as oxygen as cutting gas.

On the one hand, the blown gas acts with the cutting metal to produce oxidation reaction, releasing a lot of oxidation heat; On the other hand, molten oxides and melts are blown out of the reaction zone, and the cutting speed is far greater than that of laser vaporization cutting and melting cutting.

Laser oxygen cutting is mainly used for carbon steel, titanium steel, heat treatment steel and other easily oxidized metal materials.
