It's brilliant...

I immediately called Jay and he's gearing up to have a production run of it done. He estimates the cost will be between $199-299. I expect it will be at least several months, maybe 6-8 before he has product to ship.

Jay's background is medical imaging.

Jay's VERY excited about our Reprap printers. It's a natural combination.

This saves us SO much work. smileys with beer

That's a pretty decent price. I might have to get one.

What process does he use, is possible to just use the scan head with our motion control?

It looks to me like you put the object on a turntable which rotates and imaged via those two things pointing at it. I'm not sure what they are but probably one is a CMOS or CCD and perhaps the other one a light source?

Most likely, though it could be two CCD's. That, however, would take some pretty intense analysis software.

Yeah, I'm guessing it's a camera on one side and a laser line generator on the other.

Combine one of these with a hammer and a reprap, and you have a simple "teleporter." Scan an object in with the scanner, destroy it with the hammer, then print it in a different location with a reprap.

Sid: When I can walk up to one and say "my usual tea, please" and get a cup of Twinings Irish Breakfast, *then* it'll be like Star Trek. smiling smiley

It always struck me as odd that Picard had to specify "tea, Earl Grey, hot" every time when that was the only tea he ever ordered.

The man had no taste. Anybody who mask the flavour of terrible tea with oil of bergamot instead of simply buying good tea is a total barbarian.

... but it's an interesting milestone, when a 'repreap' will output a cup of tea ...

One of my earlier ideas in this direction:

- fab the bottom of a cup out from instant-binding ceramic-paste ...
- fab a slice of the cup-border ...
- fill the inner area with frozen dust of tea ...
- repeat this some hundred times ...
- finish the cup ...

- then put the fabbed cup filled with frozen tea-dust in a microwave-stove and let it heat ... should be something like one hour or so, until you'll receive the 'cup of tea, hot' winking smiley

Hi Forrest,

... i think it's easier (and maybe tastier too?) to shock-freese some tea and crush it to dust then develop a 'tea-paste' - i don't think instant-tea-powder and boiling water will be an appropriate alternative spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

first of all I must admit that I drank a lot of earl grey (and english breakfast ; twinings only btw) about 15 years ago.
But since I need sugar with my tea and no sugar with my coffee...
Nevermind, I'm a barbarian in short terms, at least I was some years ago grinning smiley

It shouldn't be too hard to let the machine make a cup of tea, if your okay with tea bags that is.
We just need to add some water no?
we have some machine that can lift and lower a teabag (just fix it on the carriage) we can print a mug and we have a heatsource.
So all we need is to add a cup of water somehow,
And here comes the baloon in a bottle paste extruder, substract the balloon, change the valve, and we're done winking smiley

yes I know, we have to smash another cup of tea somewhere else first to be fully star trek'ish grinning smiley

Still nothing from CES about it. Anyone know when it's supposed to be unveiled?
Re: Real-View Desktop Scanner

Why not just print the parts to a tea making machine instead?
Re: Real-View Desktop Scanner

First comments I've seen from someone who's actually seen the machine [arstechnica.com]

I also came across this though [www.architectsjournal.co.uk] "Everybody in these straitened times need a desktop 3D scanner. Especially when it's only $3000 from NextEngine and outputs to such as 3ds Max, Rhino, SolidWorks and ZBrush
