Heres a list of free (as in free beer) or DIY 3d scanners:

I tried DAVID 3d and it works if you have a good setup (good cam, narrow laser) It can also stitch multiple scans

The open source tool [meshlab.sourceforge.net] works very well for optimizing 3d scan data. I use it to stitch mutiple scans into one model, close holes, smooth and simplify the mesh. Available for OSX, Win, Linux.

The intricad system also saves to other formats, this can be handy when trying to post process or 3d print.

Besides the circuference scanner, i recently downloaded the alpha of a new project called GRASP. This is a topology scanner that I a lot easier to set up and use and use than the david

I love David-Laserscanner, just don't like the price and closed nature. Trying to plow through this paper right now... [www.rob.cs.tu-bs.de]
