Kinect Hardware Q -- Indicator Light?

For those of you familiar with Kinects:

Does a light come on immediately when the Kinect is hooked up to power, or does it have to be actively communicating with a PC?

I'm splicing wires, and so far I'm not getting anything when I connect a 12V power supply. I suspect my power supply may not provide sufficient current though.

There should be a green flashing light when its hooked up to the power.

Hi. I am using both Kinect 360 for xbox and the kinect for windows V2 (new one). And it seems that the light do NOT show even when it is connect to both the PC on the USB and the power socket (which is confusing as you have noticed). BUT the kinect will light up (scanner=red & camera green) if you start your scanning application (Kinect fusion or Skanect for example) and it does work?
