What controls extruded material exit angle
April 30, 2008 05:46AM
Hi

I have now got my extruder working. At present I am just trying to extrude from a height. The extruded material often comes out of the nozzle in curl up to 40 degrees off vertical, so much so it touches the nozzle and bunches up. But sometimes it comes out vertical. I am trying to establish if speed or temperature effects this but cannot get any consistent results. Has any one else seen this and may be have an idea how to improve the situation? My next move will be to make a new nozzle and see if that improves extrusion.

Regards

Ian

Yes if I extrude from a height the filament sometimes curls upwards, but when making an object you extrude with a height less that the filament diameter and with a head speed faster than the filament would naturally exit the nozzle. That causes the filament to bond to the table or the layer below and follow the correct coarse.

In my experience getting a deflection or curl out of your extruder nozzle typically means that you are running the extruder heater a touch too cool. Mind, if you are starting up it isn't at all unusual to get a bit of curling and oft times adhesion of the extruded filament to the extruder head as a result. I typically keep a bamboo skewer around to pick it off before that sort of thing gets out of hand.

Many thanks

As you have advised this is not the issue I thought it was and the extruder is working OK.
