I'm looking at prices of stepper motors from suppliers, and then looking at prices of cheap printers, and thinking it might be more economical to take printers apart for bits than to buy components fresh.

Am I being daft?

If you can get $5 printers, this is an option. Make sure these steppers inside the printers are bipolar (4 or 6 or 8 wire) and have enough tourque.

Hi,

Unless you really know how to strip a printer, find one with the right motors, make sure the stepper-drivers are useable or easily available AND have the patience to do all that I would steer clear of the idea. 5 x NEMA 17 Steppers from somewhere like Zapp Automation (where I order mine) may cost ~55GBP, but the saving in less hassle would be well worth it.

As you don't mind second hand motors, have a look on ebay. The main cost is usually shipping.

For instance :

I tried those, they work fine. Sometimes the shaft diameter is 4mm instead of 5, you have to match the pulleys.

Most of my technical comments should be correct, but is THIS one ?
Anyway, as a rule of thumb, always double check what people write.
