capture nut vs threaded part

capture nut vs threaded part

I see that on the Prusa i3, the z axis movement is translated by a M5 hex nut from the actuator. If I am making my frame pieces out of aluminum, would threading the part instead of using a capture nut work just as well? Anyone tried this or see any potential problems with it?

Thanks

It should work. Only problem I can see it that standard threaded rod is somewhat rough, and would wear out the plastic threads relatively quickly.

I think OP is going to cut the threads into aluminium. It will work for a while, but I have noticed that I have to change the nuts in my printer every half a year of intense printing. So when the threads wear out, it would be easier to change only the nut, not the whole part. So either use a captive nut or threaded insert.

Yep, I somehow missed that he was going to use aluminum parts. I would still think that wear would be a problem.
