I have MGN12 Rail.
thats 680mm long, im using it for my X gantry
the gantry weights about 500g

the MGN12 is very rigid.
do i really need to support via some alum extrusion. or can I just leave it bare?

Support it. Less need if you put it in the vertical orientation instead of horizontal, but even so, I'd still use a piece of Al angle to increase stiffness, and to give a place for the cable tow to rest. That's exactly what I'm doing in my next build with MGN15 for a long (800mm) X axis.
