I was poking around for various solutions to coupling the motor to threaded rod and found this solution which looked promising... thought I'd pass it along.

Hi jonnyz,

... look at the image [forums.reprap.org] in this thread: [forums.reprap.org]

Here i used pneumatic hoses with the right diameter - they are very strong and a bit elastic too.

For higher compression on the axes you can crimp a thin tube around the hose too, so it would stick much better, when the motor went hot ...

ooh, those are cool. i think you can even get something just like that from mcmaster. the only problem with those are that you dont get the major advantage of the tubing method: mainly that the tubing can flex and deal with mis-alignments in the drive rod.

Hey Viktor,

thanks for that forum thread... great discussion. Now I understand the purpose of the tubing better. I thought it was a matter of convenience and being easy to implement. I wonder how the tubing will hold up over time under the kinds of stress it will be under.

Does it make sense to lubricate the screw or coupling nut somehow?

Hi jonnyz,

... lubricating is counteracting.

With the tubes i used i have a very good grip - when lubricating, the tube is easier to apply, but can slip down easy too ...

The pneumatic tube is so strong, that i could bend it many times, until it went warm, then it go better over the thread.

When cooled down again, the grip is so strong, that i can't remove it.

But when the motor-axis went very heat, it possible could slip down again.

A sort of 'fixing lubricant' is slow polymerisating super-glue - when fluid it's lubricating, when polymerized after some minutes, it rise the grip.

Or you use a clamp to press the tube better on the axes and threads - simply a piece of metal-tube slightly bigger then the elastic tube and then crimp it down ...
