Working with uncoated nichrome wire

Hi,

I got my kit from bitsfrombytes.com which came with some Nichrome wire. I have never worked with Nichrome wire before but it appears to be uncoated. You may be able to see the wire in the attached photo - which has been badly taken on a mobile phone.

If the wire is uncoated am i right to be weary of shorting the circuit?

Has anybody set up their extruder barrel with uncoated Nichrome wire and can you describe your technique?

What is an alternative to using JD Weld?
At Maplins they sell:

Cheers

I think your best bet is to ask Ed or Adrian at Bath how they do it. I know that they used to wrap it with teflon tape, but I don't know what they do these days. I use the coated wire (glass fibre and silicone) and spray BBQ paint. I understand from nophead (Chris), however, that the kind you get in UK that you put on with a brush doesn't work that wonderfully for this sort of app.

I use exhaust paint from Halfords etc give it a good coating and allow to dry wrap the wire around and take a reading to ensure on shorts then go for the JB weld

Joe,
This is how I have just done it with J-B Weld:-

[hydraraptor.blogspot.com]

Don't be fooled by the Maplin stuff. I Googled J-B Weld, got the Maplin hit and went to buy it only to find it does not have anything like the same temperature rating. I don't know how they managed to fool Google.

That's good to know as I fell out with the eBay company I bought it from and burned my bridges with negative feedback.
