Our recent successful attempt at using a pencil to feed wire:

The wire might look like it's going slowly, but we only need to propel the wire a very short distance by this method. Once it's bonded to the part, we can hold the pencil button down and very rapidly pull out more wire using tension, just by moving the head about.
