SD card problems, Marlin+ramps1.4+reprapdiscount smartcontroller.

I finished building my printer and want to start printing while i am doing something else.
I was hopping to print without my laptop connected to the printer, and sins i got a smartcontroller i thought i could do this by printing from SD.

setup:
Marlin1.0.0
RAMPS 1.4
Smart controller from Reprapdiscount (bought about 4 months ago)

when i insert the 4Gig card i got with the controller it displays "card inserted" BUT when i look in the menu it says "no card".
I have been looking around for a solution, but have not found one until now.
I notesed that when i connect to the printer with pronterface it comes up with the following message "echo: SD init fail"
I am using the short ribbon cables,
the SD came with the controller
I am using .g insead of .gcode (dosnt matter, it dosnt even recognize the folders.)
atemts to acses the sd with pronterface faild. again "echo: SD init fail"
I checked the pins.h (i copied the part for ramps and added it in the post.)
I tried anothe SD (2Gig) and this gave the same result

Please help!

after a few days fine printing from SD it stopped reading the cards again.

I powered up my printer this morning and it wont read the card anymore.

i am really starting to think there might be somthing wrong with the smart controller or my ramps.
HELP?!

Hello guys

I've recently built my Prusa i3 with a RAMPS 1.4 board from SainSmart, and bought a RepRap Discount FullGraphic LCD with SDCard reader.
As many of you, after spending countless hours of googling and searching in forums for solutions to get my machine to read the files on the SD card I think I have finally found one solution:

In Marlin firmware, go to SDFatConfig.h and in the 74th line:

#define SPI_SD_INIT_RATE 5

Change 5 for 6 like so:

#define SPI_SD_INIT_RATE 6

After doing that my printer read .gcode files within folders with names longer than 8 characters from my 4Gb SD Card (Yes I have read in several other posts that it wont work but it did...)

I am no coder whatsoever, I have found this by trial and error in the past few days

I am sure that this wont work for everybody, but I will be happy if this can help someone.

Also you should use less than 2gb card. Formatted with FAT16

I have an 8gp scandisk ultra, and it works fine in one of my ramps but not in others, also have 4gb scandisk that doesnot work anywhere, had a 512mb that rarely works, is there a certain brand that works better or what all I have is scandisk... ramps 1.4 marlin 1

Hi, I've similar problem with my 3D Printer. I bought cheap arduino mega 2560 clone and mount into printer. Flasching with using newest marlin without any problems. I'm using blue PCB G3D LCD Panel and when I put SD Card I've got a message "card insertet", but when I entered to menu - "no SD card" sad smiley(
How to solve this problem? Earlier I had oryginal Arduino mega 2560 and everything was ok.

ho RISOLTO accorciando il cavo (della SD) di collegamento della piattina che sta sopra la RAMPS allo schermo LCD :-)

I SOLVED shortening the cable (SD) connecting the strap that is over the RAMPS the LCD screen :-)

Hello,

my SD Card now work. The solution was the hardware from Sainsmart.
There was no +5V on the regolatur for the 3.3V on the LCD.
I solder a +5V bridge to the regulator, and now it works perfect.

Die Lösung...

und es lag doch an der Hardware ;-) Ok wer sainsmart kauft muss damit rechnen.
Es ist tatsächlich so gewesen das der SD Karten Slot keine 3.3V erhalten hat.
Der Hammer ist aber bei der Leiterbahn für den Spannungswandler 5-->3.3V kamen keine 5V an.
Habe also eine Brücke vom LCD PIN 2 dort zum Regler (siehe Bild) gelegt.

Und siehe da, Karte erkannt.
Jetzt schnell ein Druck gemacht. Der ging aber völlig in die Hose, der Drucker machte seltsame Sachen.
Habe herausgefunden das meine SD Karte wohl zu langsam war. Na egal jetzt steckt eine 8 !! GB FAT32 SD Karte
drin und der Drucker rennt wie verrückt.

Grundsätzlich versuche ich selbst Lösungen zu finden, nur manchmal bekomme ich es nicht hin und noch mehr graue Haare stehen mir nicht. I know it's an old topic but I just ran into this problem too. Card inserted but no sd card message. I tried Neo_999's solution and it didn't work. I checked for the voltage as kwims suggested and it's OK. I switched cards from 32gig to 2gig and the problem remains.

Hi

I was about to reopen this old thread too.

I tried an old, old 16MB SD (SDC-16M) card It didn't work. Even setting SDSLOW in configuration.h

I've just bought a SDHC card which (now) works.

Problem is - Its an 8GB card - I had to partition it down to 2GB and format it as FAT. (FAT16)

It works but I'm a bit galled at throwing away 6GB*. The cardreader wouldn't recognize it as FAT32. I couldn't format FAT16 as an 8GB.

I'm curious how Floyd and mgooch above (and anyone else please) got their 4GB & 8GB's to work.

Did you FAT32? or find a way to FAT16 a bigger partition than 2GB? Or is there another way?

Mine is the RepRapDiscount FULL GRAPHIC Smart Controller

Answers please, computer wizzes.

Solved using Partition Table Type "msdos"

I was receiving the "No SD Card" error as well, despite having seen the "Card Inserted" message first on the main screen. The issue for me was the partition table type on my SD card (not the partition type). I use linux and a program called Gparted to format disks and thumbdrives. In Gparted if you delete all the partitions then go to "Device -> Create Partition Table" there are various partition table types to select from, and the only one that this LCD panel card reader can read is the "msdos" partition table type. After I created the partition table using "msdos" partition table type, I was able to create a FAT32 partition that was almost 16GB large, and it works fine. The LCD panel now recognizes my SD card and can print from the card as well.

I have faced with similar problem too. In my case the SDcard works overall.
But...
If printer is switched on while SDcard is in the slot - it works: SDcard is visible and can be used.
If I insert the card into powered printer, I see message "Card inserted", but menu claims that "No SD card" and Pronterfece printed "echo: SD init fail" in the console. If after that I send "M21" (Init SDcard) command then I get "echo: SD init ok" and card content appears in the menu of LCD controller. So, the only first init just after card insertion is failed. I assume that there is not sufficient delay somewhere. But where?

PS Tried Marlin 1.0.0 and 1.1.0-RC2 - the behavior is the same.

Official SD Card formatting tool

I was reading this post about using SD cards in other applications. This points to a tool which can format an SD card in a good format for Arduino.

I formatted a 32 Gig card and plugged it into my PRUSA i3, reads and prints no problems.

This seems like the easiest way. I hate fiddling with firmware unless I digest the code first, a definite time sink!

I formatted SD by Window OS by select SD Drive and right click menu Format... and set to FAT. It Work OK now.

I formatted my 4GB in FAT32 it is working fine now. controller does not recognize NTFS.

I have the same problem after moving my electronics inside my kossel (=directly underneath the heated bed) the elctronics are protected from the heat by a case I printed, but the cables going to the display can come in contact with the heat. It worked fine for some prints, but the last two prints needed me to fiddle the cables and the sdcard around 10 minutes until it recognized the card. those were around 6h prints and they didn't stop like they would if you pulled out the card mid-print, so I guess the problem is not in connection but in initiation. don't know yet, just wanted to contribute if this might help someone.
