Marlin 1.0.3 + Rambo + Reprapdiscount smart LCD = no display

I'm hoping the title explains the problem I am having. I am trying to upgrade from a working copy of Marlin RC2 to Marlin 1.0.3 and I am unable to get my reprapdiscount smart LCD display to work. This is not the full graphics unit. I have the right library installed, everything works with the old firmware. With the new firmware, all I get are white boxes. Is this a known bug or is there something I am missing? I have #define REPRAP_DISCOUNT_SMART_CONTROLLER uncommented and everything else looks right.

One thing that caught me when I last upgraded Marlin was a new addition in config.h Line 579

579 #define LANGUAGE_INCLUDE GENERATE_LANGUAGE_INCLUDE(en)

needed uncommenting.

I just checked, that was already uncommitted. Anyone else have any ideas?
