Prusa I3 Aluminum Frame

Now that Prusa I3 has been open sourced, I'm wondering if anyone is ramping up production on the slick aluminum plate frame? If anyone is able to create them, I'd be interested in hearing from you.

does any one know the thickness?

i see in the config file

// Thickness of the XZ plate board
board_thickness = 16;

so i guess there 16mm ?

We are looking into doing 3/16" aluminum milled plates for the i3. After checking josefs out at NY, no way, they arent 16mm. Waterjetting is too expensive, but we have 4 mills, and some unique fixtures, so we can mill them. We are prob going to use a tool and jig plate aluminum, its much stiffer and flatter than standard 6160.

It looks more like 5 or 6mm thick only.

Definitely 6mm thick: [www.youtube.com]

i cannot see if it makes much difference really?

to my knowlege the base bolts to it using penny washers and m8 nuts so anything should do aslong as its stiff enough to take the movement.

If you want to tap the holes, then you need a minimum thickness. You can always use nuts on the other side, of course.

hummmm never thought about tapping the holes. would be handy that would think thread lock would be a must though with the shaking and movement

Josef might have a deal too: [twitter.com]

But it may not be worth it for people outside of Europe. No idea about how much.

I would check with josef prusa in IRC to confirm what version of the DFX to use, and confirm what branch/parts to use with it. On github, there is a jofinal branch (his) which has the frame dfx, but it is different than the wooden version in the master branch. The jofinal also only has some of the files, so it isn't clear to me if the aluminum version (which, I think requires slightly different plastic parts from what I have heard) has a complete set of files there to make it work and if there are other differences from master. Hopefully someone provides these frames soon, or josef gets his store going soon. Clearly there is demand...

TO support Josef if he gets his store going I will just buy from him also.
however as a backup I am still working with a few Chinese suppliers for a offer (probably also in anodized red color)

I'm doing mine with 6mm acrylic (that can be tapped too): [plus.google.com]

Still a work in progress.

So I decided to add a lasercut laminate to our website tonight. It's the same melamine material that we're using in our rostockMAX kits, it's super strong and stiff, and super cheap! The only mods made to Joey's files are, I removed the heatsinks (since we're cutting wood not al) and also I am just spot marking where all the holes are supposed to be. I've seen a lot of people mixing up which hardware and where, so I thought if I just mark where they go, you can drill for whatever hardware you choose. The Melamine does tap threads well, and once you cut the threads, wick in some thin super glue and they'll be pretty strong for a long time too.

Best part is, $32 plus shipping! Send me a message is you have any questions or requests

That is great johnoly99! Finally, someone selling the frame!

I find the inclusion of the melamine heatsink to be a lovely Dada art statement in the style of the fur-covered teacup and saucer by Meret Oppenheim. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

LOL, ok, you want the heatsink back in it? I can do that. Maybe paint them hot pink or red, so then they are like motor "accents", like a spoiler for the trunk of a FWD car. hahaha

Remember this is still in development, I can see this open issue that worries me: [github.com]

I cannot finish my build till I get the linear bearings so I cannot comment on that yet.

How much ship to uk
Re: Prusa I3 Aluminum Frame
November 05, 2012 10:12AM
chriss33, because it is a large 15" square, usps is the cheapest shipping method, and it's $45 usd to the uk, or pretty mmuch anywehre outside the US, Canada and Mexico. If you're interested, let me know, our website doesn't calculate shipping it well, so I'll just send you a paypal invoice for it.
