Greetings,
I've been experiencing some frustration in getting my RAMPs to work, I was wondering if anyone could comment.
Im using a lab supply right now to power the board (I am a bit paranoid about hooking up the modified ATX, worried
about the high current and my expensive electronics)
It seems the motors are turning with the test software, but I can't get them all running at one time. Plugging in one
(especially the current thirsty parallel z-axis) seems to shut down the others, even after I have tested each one with
good connectors. I've noticed that adjusting the screws can get two working (albeit with some sputtering) at once,
but no more than two.
I've examined my connectors for shorts and mistakes many times, I can't find any. My lab supply sputters if I try
to raise it above 3A (and indeed, higher currents tend to stop one or more motors). I am currently re-making connectors
just in case there's some short I am missing. But this is getting frustrating.
Im thinking that the supply might be busted, since its rated for 10+A, but sputters >3A. Either that, or a bad connection
could have possibly damaged a chip? I've been careful not to run these chips too hot. I just want to see the whole thing
working before connecting the ATX, uploading firmware and carrying on.
Any ideas?

Hi Charlie,
you should first adjust the motor current per driver to a safe level, so the motors and driver chip won't overheat - especially the driver chip will behave like 'sputtering' if his overtemp.-protection cuts the current until the temp. lowers to normal condition again.
Most of the common driver chips are rated to 2 Amps, but only with good coolant, so check your working conditions and try to set the current to a lower value ...

Hook up the ATX supply. A 3A lab supply is sufficient for two motors, no heaters, only. You have to disconnect (after powering down) the other motors, as they suck current even when not moving.
