Hello,
I have order all of the parts for a Prusa i2 and now I need a power supply. So what I need to know is what type of power supply is required? Any available for cheap? Just rip any put off an old PC?

If you guy have a personal favourite, please tell me!

I'd pick up a new one so the fan is good. 400 watts or more, if you're using a heated bed. (Heated glass is THE best surface for PLA printing.)

For the 11A connection for the bed heater, take the CPU output from the power supply, it's usually on a separate connector with four black and four yellow wires. Join two or more of the yellow for the positive, and join two or more of the black for negative. 11 Amps of current over just one of this wires will warm the wire.

There is a power switch line on the big connector, usually green in color. You need to ground it to black to switch the supply on.

I use an old 450W computer power supply with no issues.

All you really need is a 12 volt power supply. The rest of the "stuff" in a PC power supply is wasted. If you are using a Ramps board, it will only handle 16 amps (200W). Some of the other boards will handle even less. The gotcha with PC power supplies is that a "400 watt supply" may or may not be able to deliver 16A at 12 W. A lot of the power in a PC is on the lower voltage outputs.

Not sure where you are located but:

TRC Electronics

has good prices on power supplies, unless you want the $15 ebay chinese junk ones.

$45 for a 29A, 12 V power supply from MeanWell, which makes power supplies for other manufacturers, and you will find their small dc power supplies in all sorts of electronics if you open them up.

Amazon has similar name brand supplies for close to $80.

If you pay for a Meanwell, make sure that's what you get. There are a lot of "clones" with very similar names. They do make good supplies. I suspect that's why people try to rip off the name.

TRC is a US Meanwell distributor.

.... and thus a *much* better place to buy one than some ebay seller with a total of 6 transactions listed...
