The print plate design is holding me up at the moment.
I need to finalise the height from the top of the bearing blocks to the print surface.
I have a 300x300mm silicone heater bed.
Tested it with a 12v 35 amp supply. It draws 21A ie about 250W.
Got a 3mm glass mirror tile to test as a print surface.
Will try sandwiching the heater between the glass and a 300mm square of the signboard.

Working towards finalising the design.
To do
Thrust bearing mounts for the Z axis threaded rod.
Brass nuts for the Z axis threaded rod.
Y axis motor mount.
XY axis idler bearing mounts
XY axis carriage belt retainers.
Z axis dial gauge mount for bed leveling
End stop switch mounts
Probably go for extra Z axis bracing for cosmetic reasons

Got the rest of the major parts cut out.
I'm just marking them out from dimensioned drawings and cutting them out by hand with a jigsaw then fileing and smoothing.
Holes are cut a bit oversize to allow for error.

Decided to only use adhesive to assemble the frame. I am using 20x20 ali extrusion to join the parts.
I know this will work as I used the same system on my model trailer to carry the 40% aerobatic aircraft in.

Got the major part of the frame glued together.
A few smaller parts to do and a bit of extra stiffening.

Got the ends glued on, reinforced with 20x20 ali angle.

Rod, is it my eyes or why is the platform slanted?
I'm just adding various reinforcements at the moment. Should start assembling the mechanics this week.

I decided to add some 3mm button head stainless cap screws to make sure it stays together. It needed around 50 of them, fortunately I get them for a good price.

Working on the Z axis. Am using 6x1mm Stainless steel threaded rod, brass nuts, and adaptors. Also deep groove ball bearings to take the thrust loads.

A 7/8" spade bit cut a nice hole for the thrust bearing.

Aluminium angle for mounting the Z axis nut needed a bit of milling for clearance.
Thrust bearing mount. Hopefully it will not bend, but if it does I can change the angle with a shim.
Nut mount in place. As you can see the designing has reduced to pen and paper
Finished Z axis. Turns freely. Not the most elegant design but good enough.

A range of cable chain arrived from China. 7x7mm 10x10mm and 10x15mm.
Have decided to redesign the X carriage for dual extruders so I can do support material. Not sure whether to get another Bulldog XL or go with a lighter Wade's.

Started work on the X and Y belt retainers. I do a lot of molding with epoxy so decided to mold them onto aluminium mounts using an epoxy/microfibre mix.

Made the belt idlers. I had the flanged bearings in one of my spares boxes, salvaged from the technical wrecker.

Working on the build platform. Stiffening the base plate and adding aluminium hard points for the leveling screws.
I got a 300 mm square of 5mm toughened glass and stuck the heater pad to it. I think I will insulate it from the top plate with a piece of vermiculite cloth (fire blanket).
