A grub screw is also called a set screw, it's a short screw with no head and just a slot for adjusting.
The mudgard/fender washer has a larger outside diameter that a regular washer. A regular washer would be M8x16
I used 4" cable ties on my printer, they were plenty big for everything I needed.

Mendel uses M5 mudguard washers, not M8.

With regards to the mudguard washes, I find even the M5 variant hard to come by, however a 5/32 x 3/4 x 20G is roughly the same size, and is a standard size that I can get from a fasteners specialist.
Has anyone used these over mudguards?
4.1 x 19 x 0.9mm

They are generally called "penny" or "repair" washers in the UK.

I've not heard that term before NopHead, but then again, before Mendel was released, I never heard of mudguard washers either.

In any case i'm costing up for fasteners, locally buying, as I got those bits you sent me on the 9th.
M5 mudguards and M4 mudguards are difficult to find, though as I mentioned before the similar sized 5/32 x 3/4 x 20G looks to be the best variant.

Yes I had never heard of mudguard, fender, repair or penny washers before reprap. Ian Adkins told me they were called penny washers and that finds them on eBay.

So is NZ imperial or metric?

Countries using Imperial system are

U.S.A, Liberia, and Burma

With us in the UK slowly moving away from the stone age.

Interesting to see USA up there with Liberia and more specifically Burma!! winking smiley

Mitre10 calls them Fender washers, (when I picked up some M10 fenders for the workshop that I am putting together), but don't go down to M5

RS has some M5 Fender/Mudguard washers.

They do, but in bulk, which is no good when you will only need 15.

The datasheet says to get M5 if M4 mudguards are not available, yet they are in a standard size of 5/32 x 3/4 x 20G

NZ used metric, however imperial sizes are easily obtainable.

Which is the same as saying 3.97 ID x 19.05 OD x 0.9 thick.

These aren't a critical part, the imperial equivalent will do fine so long as it accepts an M4 bolt. In a real pinch, you could use a bit of spare thin sheet, just drill it for the bolt and take care that the sharp edges don't damage the belt it is guiding.

Seems that in NZ, like Australia, the building trade has yet to move on from Imperial. Due to this, while Metric is definitely available, certain things can be easily found in Imperial with no issue.

I too used Imperial washers for the 'M5 mudguard' washers with no issues.

True, although 100 for $9.25 and no postage costs at the moment from RS isn't that bad a price. Mind you the implement workshop down the road from me might have some, they have got most things in there.

(And I note these guys [www.steelmasters.co.nz] sell them as well)

NZ building trade uses metric wherever possible, where imperial is required, like the washers I mentioned, they can be sourced locally.

That is what I meant by easily obtainable, they sell them, Anzor sells them etc.

FYI I am getting my fasteners from Anzor, purely because they sell SS fasteners, and will be going for 304 grade, however the mudguard/imperial washers will be ZP.

@Andrew, thanks for the info, I can go ahead and procure all the fasteners.

Cheers all

I also meant that steelmasters sold the metric measures as well

I use some washers, laser cut from 2 mm acrylic, external diameter - 20 mm, internal diameter - 4 mm.. They work well.
