Proposed enhancements for Skeinforge
March 24, 2011 07:16PM
Dear fellow forum members,
I would like to bring up a few ideas that I have for SF. Unfortunately I am not a programmer and can not do these alterations myself. (Maybe someone shows me the way). I would appreciate if I could get help.. (I sent this to enrique already but didint get any response, so I am trying my luck here..)

Ease in Ease out
1- İn Laser, Plasma or Waterjet cutting the beam never punches through the material of the object itself. Instead it starts a few mm ofset from the original path and then eases in… I have tried this with an Excel generated table and the results are great although I kept extruding easing in and out.. I have attached you my Gcode and Excel file in case you want to look into it to eavluate.. You then could start from the infillside and then ease into the perimeter…. I dont think that you have to consider the fill being twice in that area. Should be negligible.

2- As oozeebane is pretty obsolete as most people use retract instead, You could probably add these to the retract function.
a. Nice would be if there was a method to cancel or reduce retract if the previous extrusion amount was under a certain limit. Retract could have a maximum value and if the previous extrusion was not long enough it would only retract maybe 70% of the extrusion… This would give better results in small parts with lots of details.
b. A minimum distance to specify if the distance where the extruder would be turned off was too short not to retract at all. (You have that already somewhere else but not for retract)
c. A way to have the retraction to be done on the fly, on the way to the next starting point. Or at least that the filament is not fed back while the head does not move… Momentary the movement stops, filament retracts (oozes still a little), moves, then the filament is back in position spoiling the starting point.
d. It would also be nice if we could adjust feedrate during this move would be nice so we could move faster and tear off the remaining ooze or at least make it very thin.

3- The new volumetric flowrate setting is very good although it caused some confusion in the beginning. I managed to change it to suit my needs. The file is posted elswhere on the forum. [forums.reprap.org]

Thanks

I have another one:
Add the option not to print the outermost perimeter on the first layer:
Not printing this perimeter makes sure that the bottom layer doesn't "stick out", which helps a lot when printing gears.

This implies that the top and bottom of gears should have a fillet. Maybe the openscad involute gear script could be modified to do that automatically?

Yes, a fillet to the bottom and top layers would be a useful addition to skeinforge. It would be great to add it to the gear script. I will give it a try to incorporate it. But it would be great to have it in Skeinforge, because the bottom layer is always sticking out, and it would be nice for a lot of situations not to have this happen.
