Question about hot end resistor connection
March 05, 2012 09:33AM
I bought two 6.8 ohm 3w resistors, how should I connect it, in parallel or in series?
Thanks

Normally one is sufficient, but if you want more heat then wire them in parallel but check your electronics can handle the extra current. I.e. 3.5A.

If you wire them in series you would get half the power unless you increase the supply voltage to 24V to get twice the power with same current, i.e. 1.75A.

Thanks, but how do I check whether my sanguinololu can handle 3.5A or not? or should I just use one? would it be enough to get hot end to 200+ degree? I'm only using an ATX as power supply.
Thanks again.

I think the Sanguinololu uses the same FET for the extruder heater as it does for the bed heater so it should be good for a lot more than 3.5A.

One is enough to get nearly 300C with most hot end designs. I run a single 6R8 at about 60% power to get 250C.
