UsbTiny to Sanguinolulu which is Pin1?
March 31, 2012 02:15PM
I am trying to Burn the bootloader via the ISP using USBTiny.

My question is which one is pin 1?

It says this "Connect the six pin cable of the USBTiny to your RepRap board's ISP header. Orientation is critical (red wire corresponds to pin 1)!"
Here: [reprap.org]

I tried figuring it out but I don't know how to read schematics yet. This is the schematic drawing for the USBTiny: [www.ladyada.net] I dont know the orientation of the schematic and the board.

The Sangunolu I am not sure where Pin 1 would start. Does Pin 1 start from left to right like a western book or right to left etc.... [reprap.org]

I also attached a photo of my setup. Thanks.

Pin 1 is MISO, so you would use the 6-pin cable and put the stripe to the left. The key peg should be situated right above SCK as well as another point of reference. FWIW, if you look at the back of the board, you'll notice the MISO pin pad is square, denoting pin 1.

Thanks. The USBTiny seem to connect correctly. The power light on the Sanguinolulu came on, the green power light and busy light came on when loading the bootloader for the USB tiny but it fails to load the bootloader. I tried Arduino 018 and Arduino V1 with the Sanguino extension... I have the Atmega 644p

This is the message I get:

Error while loading bootloader.
avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
this check.

Any suggestions?

Edit: Do I need to remap the pins for the ribbon cable that came with the USBTiny? as mentioned in here? [forums.reprap.org]

Edit2: I figured it out. I used arduino 18 with the respective sanguino extension. I plugged the 6 pin cord in with the red cord on the left. So it seemed like it was upside down. Not sure why I couldn't get it to work before.
