Why connect SDA en SCL when you have RS485 for a stepper motor?

Can somebody explain me why it's necessary when you use a stepper motor you have to connect the SDA en SCL on you're motherboard with D9 en D10 on you're extruder controller when you also have RS485 communication? I read it's for the step and direction wherefore is the RS485 used then? Only for thermistor values, connect/deconnect heater??

Yes, that is correct.
The RS485 is used for everything EXCEPT controlling the exturder stepper motor, that is what SDA/SCL - D9/D10 is used for.
