Stepper motors going back and fourth, not much else.

I've just put together my prusa i3 with an sanguino 1.3a and when I hook it all up, my stepper motors go back and fourth about half a turn and all I can see in pronterface is numbers scrolling up, which I suspect are the thermistor outputs.

It looks my stepper motors are disabled. Is that easily fixed?

I don't seem to be able to send anything to it like a print file or a sketch in arduino IDE, though they do seem to connect to the device fine.

Is there any way to tell what firmware is on the chips or if it has a bootloader? It came with its polulu steppers attached so I thought it would come preprogrammed.

What should it do when it powers up first time?

This is the device I have: [www.ledsandchips.com]

Am I right in thinking I need a seperate device to program it with a bootloader or other programs?

Can anyone tell what I am doing wrong?

I had to use an older version of arduino IDE 0022, then I was able to upload repetier firmware and it worked. Slic3r won't compile now, but I've gotten further anyway. It looks like I do have an intact bootloader so I don't need to buy a programmer.
