Since dc monters are cheap, why not use a dc motor and possilbly resistor wire to measure the traveled distance?

You could possibly use PID control with just this.

... this is a frequent question, as old as RepRap - serach through the forum with "servo motor" and [All Dates set] (e.g. - [forums.reprap.org] )

Steppers are easier to work with, servos will be better for high dynamic applications, but then much more expensive than comparable steppers too ...
