First complex print on RepRapPro Mendel

I assembled the printer over Christmas, got a couple of excellent test prints and then it all went to pot. Improvments to the temperature control, and a higher extruder temperature brought things back and here's my first 'complex' print, from Dizingof on Thingiverse [www.thingiverse.com]

I'm very pleased with this, but still need to get properly to grips with Skeinforge - it's frustrating that the tweaks you make to get a particular print to work (changing fill settings for instance) are lost each time you work on another print. That also makes it hard to fix problems because there's no 'history' for previous prints that came out better or worse.

Hey Tuna.
Nice print.
When I am trying something different , I do a quick slice to a flash disk and then change the output file name to reflect the alterations made.
Eg. Cube20 for a test cube at 20/ sec.
Or cube20_point1retract_10_jnfill. gcode
This would reflect a test cube at 20mm/sec with 0.1 retract and infill of 10%.
Makes it a snap to remember settings used.

I make a journal or diary of my prints. This helps saving settings and tuning in my printer. I Include such things as:

Printer:

* # of parts printer has printed in its lifetime:
* Part Name:
* Plastic Color:
* Plastic type:
* Bed Temp:
* Extruder Temp:
* Print time:
* Layer Height:
* Quality of result:
* Notes for this print:
* Parts of printer that required tightening before/after print:
* Infill settings:
* All other needed settings
* And any other info you might find important.

I have a separate log for each printer and it comes in very handy. It also let's me track wear and tear on parts and estimate very closely on when certain things are about to go out on my printer. I also use this log to estimate my reprap maintenance. If you keep track of the above info for every print; It makes running your bot effortless. Just an idea.
