Dialing in the stepper drivers pots.

Hello all! First of many questions to come. How do I dial in the stepper driver pots? What pins should I probe and what voltage should I be reading?

Next time you build a 3D printer, get decent electronics with software control of stepper motor currents. It's much easier, and you don't risk blowing up the stepper motor driver chips.

Meanwhile, take a look at [reprap.org] and pay attenton to Note 2.

Will do! This is my first kit, still learning the ropes. smiling smiley As of right now XYZ drivers are outputting .67V and the extruder stepper at .84V. Am I in the clear?

using this equation: Vref = (motor max AMP*0.7, usuall 1.5A to allow ~50% heatup) * 8 * (resistance)

Specs I found for the stepper motors (XYZ):
Brand Busheng Model 17HD34008-22B rated power 6.6 (W)
product type Hybrid stepper motors Rated voltage 4.8 (V) Rated current 1.5 (A)
Rated speed 500 (rpm) Rated torque 320 (NM) Dimensions 42 × 42 × 34 (mm)
certified product ROHS Scope 3D printers, industrial automation, medical equipment effectiveness 100 (%)

Extruder Stepper:
Brand Busheng Model 17HD60001-22B rated power 15.2 (W)
product type Stepper motor Rated voltage 2.4 (V) Rated current 1.5 (A)
Rated speed 200 (rpm) Rated torque 700 (NM) Dimensions 42 * 42 * 60 (mm)
certified product ce Scope 3D printer, automated machinery effectiveness 100 (%)

So your motors are all rated at 1.5A. Try driving them at 1A and increase to 1.2A if necessary. Assuming your drivers have 0.1 ohm sense resistors, you need 0.8V for 1A, or 0.96V for 1.2A. So the values you already have are about right.

Right now they're turning at .15V for the XYZ and .25V for the extruder drivers. I haven't turned the pots to .67V or .84V because I feel like thats a HUGE jump when they're running at .15V. Is there any negative effect to be underpowering them?
