3dr Motor control

I finally have my 3dr assembled, using ramps1.4 have my power supply to the board, and do to prepare>move axis>move 1mm and all I here is the motor buzzing. checked my wiring to the ramps board, and I can light an led based on the 2 pairs when I free spin the motor.

not sure what to try next.

Have you set the current limiters on your stepper drivers?

Yes, I am about .45v on the steppers. I am going to check my program next, but that is where I am at.

I'm using ramps1.4 with A4988 drivers

Motors are 2.5A 1.8deg/step move with feeling like steps when turning the motor without power. Both pairs of wires do lite an LED connected to the motor.

not sure what to look into next.

I know this noise....and heard it often before I understood what the problem is.

If you have the RAMPS board from Saint Smart, than chance are great that there are no jumpers on the board. And as you know, stepping can not be configured with the software or firmware, at least not for RAMPS.

So, check your hardware Microstepping configuration first, then configure your firmware...Repetier needs to know which you have choosed...Marlin does not... I recommend Repetier firmware. The pins you need to jumper are located under the stepper drivers.

ok, I downloaded repetier, added the pins for 1/16 step, verified it in the configuration.h but I cannot get it uploaded, i've tried every baudrate, it just times out.

It times out, because the arduino software didn t find your board. You must select it in the menu Tools under board and then Arduino 2560. Further you have to select the usb port, also under tools then serial ports then portX...

Zac,

thanks for the config file. that helped a ton, this sketch is quite a bit smaller then the default one for some reason. I have 2 of the 3 motors starting to play, I have some new 4 pin cables coming tomorrow, so I will check a few more things and if nothing, wait for that so I can make sure that I am getting a good connection for the motors. I stole some old connectors from some older equipment. The motors try and move, but get that brrrrrrrgh when it moves a little, something is still off.

Show me please how you jumpered the board for 16 microstepping with a picture. Just to be sure... :-)

If a motor still brrr and not anymore plays the "police sirene" you are dealing now with something else....It can be

1. a poor connection
2. a wrong cable connection
3. the stepper should deliver more power to move the motor (use the screw to go higher)
4. is something blocking the motor....? Check all motors operations out of the 3DR frame...so you know there is nothing blocking...

Be aware, it is the firmware for my 3DR...you still have to tune yours yourself!

You could also use [www.repetier.com] to generate your firmware configuration file with a wizard.

Attached is the picture of my jumpers in for 16 step.



I've recieved my new 4 pin pigtails and will be replacing them tonight,

I've already increased the stepper driver to .45 v, Once i have the new cables on, I will check and test again.

With no power to the motors, the arms all move really nice.

I have already tweaked your configuration file, since I don't speak german smiling smiley

Other then that I really appreciate your help, I can't wait to get the finally running..

My extruder is configured at 8 microstepping in the firmware. Your board is setup to run 16 microstepping.

Zac,

ok I moved my microstepping to 8, switchted out the 4-pin connectors, and now the extruder motor runs really smooth, and 1 corner runs smooth, 1 runs rough, and 1 doesnt move.

Getting closer, Just need to troubleshoot why the one isn't moving.

I hope you are testing the motors out of the frame. Correct ? And what about the firmware, did you upload it ?

Firmware is loaded, the issue with the 2 other motors is the small spool connected to the motor shaft. I think the screws are just a tad short, so I am not getting a good bite on the motor shaft. so its slipping. Yes, I uploaded the firmware. I feel that I am really close.

Spool ?? You are using the plastic spool with fishing line ?

Be aware that my firmware configuration is using GT2 belt and pulley. I hadn t good experience with fishing line and plastic spool. There are other issues with this, not only the screw problem.

By the way, when you start calibration with the configuration tool of repetier, I recommend to watch this very new and good video of calibration posted by Jay Couture. Thanks a lot for this job!

ok , all motors are running now, but I have 1 motor that doesn't want to stop when it gets to the endstop. the led lights up, but the motor keeps going. It is my X motor I've checked the endstops to make sure that they are coordinated with the corresponding Motor. I'm feeling that its something with the config file now. I should check in the endstop area right?

Either the endstop is misconfigured in the firmware or you have pluged the connector of the endstop to wrong max-port on the board. You must connect them to the max-port not the min-port.

Motor issues are fine now. I see why you went away from the fishing line for the drive. I'll most likely do that on an upgrade. I had an issue with the thermister shutting off, but I had a loose wire. So I have gone thru the fun part of calibrating, and this is where I am at. seems that I'm not getting a correct Z height for layers. I am printing the 20mm box

Print on the left is the first attempt. one on the right is the 2nd attempt( the box is approx 13.4x15.6x12.7mm). They are laying on their side.

I'm printing PLA first layer @ 175 other layers at 170

layer height .35mm

What other options should I post to help...
