Stepper motor driver

Hi,

What driver do you think is the best to control a Nema 17 motor??

The motor references are:

Step angle 1.8
Rate voltage 3.4V
Rate current 1.7A
Phase resistance 2 Ohm
Phase inductance 3mH
Holding torque 4000g/cm 0.40Nm
Lead wire 4

What is the difference between a4988 and DRV8825 ??
What do you recomend?

The DRV8825 have 1/32 microstepping vs 1/16 for the a4988, the DRV8825 should also be able to handle a bit higher currents due to better PCB.

If you are going to use a Mega to drive your printer it is going to have a hard time getting high speeds with the DRV8825 due to the 1/32 microstepping.

They´re both good for that stepper.
The DRV8825 can do 1/32 microstepping, where the A4988 can only do 1/16. And it can deliver more current, if necessary. ( 2.5A max. vs. 2A max.)

Be aware, that the driverboards have different orientation, regarding the potmeter position!
If you see a picture of a Ramps board populated with A4988, check the potmeter orientation and remember the DRV8825 has the potmeter on the other side.
The best way of finding the right direction is to compare the GND-pin position.
GND is always pointing away from the power screw terminals.

Read this if you plan to use DRV8825:
