Kossel Delta xxl build project HELP
January 02, 2019 11:18PM
Hi to everybody and Happy New Year,
My name is Alex and I'm planning to build a Kossel xxl Delta. I have never build a 3D printer , this is going to be my first one. I don't want to buy the printer, I want to build one and use only genuine parts because I believe this is the only way to support the 3D community and the developers.
I'm from Europe but I live in Dallas, Tx. I have seen many cheap parts on the market , but I'm too poor to afford cheap things.
Printer specification sad smiley I copied this from David Crocker's Solutions blog )
Bed diameter: 330mm,
300mm printable
Build height: 480mm at edges, 540mm at centre
Total height: 1m
Filaments: PLA and ABS capable and other materials
Interfaces:
– Native USB port
– Ethernet supporting telnet, web interface, control via smartphone, HTTP and FTP file upload
– Colour touch-screen control panel
Single extrusion, upgradable to dual
Differential infrared Z-probe
I want to use a Nimble and a E3D Volcano hotend
Duet3d Wifi electronics, with 7" panel due touch screen control.
24V power supply.
Heated bed
Smart Effector
Self levelling
Magnetic Carbon rods
500W mains bed with SSR
I know it will be a long journey but I'm sure it will be worth it .
I'm ready to start ordering the parts but I don't know where should I begin. If there is any BOM with links for Delta xxl parts , please guide me to it.
Thank you in advance.
Alex

Thanks for choosing my design (which is of course based on Johann Rocholl's original Kossel). I describe the current version of that printer at [miscsolutions.wordpress.com]. It includes a link to the BOM, which is at [docs.google.com].

If you really want to upgrade the bed heating power from 350W to 500W while keeping the same bed size, then you should definitely add a thermal cutout, because at continuous full power it would reach somewhere between 250C and 300C.

One change I will make to mine soon is to replace the Titan extruder by a Bondtech, probably in a gimballed mount to allow use of a shorter Bowden tube.

Thank you David for responding so quickly. I’m looking forward to your input.
You chose Bondtech instead of Nimble. Is Bondtech much better then Nimble ?
What about E3D Volcano hotend. Witch is the best setup for my project ?
Thank you

I haven't tried the Nimble, but at least one user has posted on the forum at duet3d.com about using a Nimble with the Smart Effector. I haven't tried the Volcano either, and I read that the Volcano heat break isn't compatible with the screw-top heatsink.

Thank you David.
Bondtech it is.

the heatbreak is the same between the regular v6 and the volcano, i an running a volcano with the screw top on my smart effector with a nimble on my delta. so far the nimble has performed well. flex3drive also makes a smart effector variant of there remote direct drive extruder as well. you really cant go wrong with either of those or the bondtech.

Thank you for your replay. Since Nimble is out of stock for a long time i will go with Bondtech BMG and the E3D V6 Gold edition. Do you have some pictures with you set up ?

I check the Bondtech.com website and I don't know witch one to buy.
1.) [www.bondtech.se] For this one I should use a Nema 17 pancake Stepper Motor ? ( [www.bondtech.se] )
2.) [www.bondtech.se]
3.) [www.filastruder.com] This hot end sounds good.
3.) I’m looking for Capricorn PTFE tubing : [www.filastruder.com]
Please take a look over this and let me know witch one is ok to buy.
Thank you

The Bondtech extruder has 3:1 gearing so I would use a more powerful stepper motor with it, in the range 20 to 25Nm torque at rated current.

The Smart Effector includes the screw top heatsink already, so you don't need that part of the hot end. Ask Filastruder what hot end options they sell for the Smart Effector. Also decide whether you want to use a thermistor or a PT100 or PT1000 temperature sensor (the PT100 requires an extra daughter board for the Duet).

Thank you David. I'm waiting for Filastruder . About thermistor or a PT100 or PT1000 , I will say the PT 100. What is your recommendation? I can't find a stepper motor in the range 20 to 25Nm torque for the Bondtech. Can you please point me to one ?
Thank you

duet wifi
duet smart effector
hayden mangetic arms
zesty nimble
e3d volcano
p3-d plated aluminum nozzle
16 tooth pulleys
meanwell 150 watt power supply
200 watt mains powered bed
crydom ssr
mic 6 aluminum bed with pei
omc nema 17 17HM19-2004S steppers for xyz
omc nema 14 14HS11-1004S for the nimble
cpc 15mm linear rails
kossel k25000 Corner Brackets

only thing i would not reccommed is the kossel k25000 brackets, because of the number of fasteners needed to assemble the upper and lower triangles (95 m3 screws and 95 m3 tee nuts).

i would either stay with the robotdigg 2040 or 3030 corners or design something similar to the tevo little monster with linear rails.

Thank you David for your answer . I do apologize for delay.
This is the answer from Filastruder about hot end and options they sell for the Smart Effector : All of the 1.75mm v6 or Volcano options are suitable. PT100 sensors are cartridge style, so they’ll work with v6 or Volcano as well.
I do apologize and feel so embarrassed because I'm copying your design. You have put so much work in it. I am a beginner in 3D printing but I am eager to learn more to be able to build one on my one.

Thank you tolar205 for your answer and advice for corners. I do apologize for delay. How tall it is ? How big is the bed ? From where you got the bed and the top and bottom plates ?
Re: Kossel Delta xxl build project HELP
January 08, 2019 09:10PM
this is my first delta so i decided to build a smaller one first. it is about 750mm tall with a 200mm x 260mm max print area. i designed everything myself and had 713maker cut all the plates. i will at some point redesign it and eliminate the existing corners, but that wont be for a while.
Re: Kossel Delta xxl build project HELP
January 08, 2019 10:16PM
Thank you for your answer and info about the plates. How thick they are ? My printer it will be 1000 mm tall and bed diameter: 330 mm. I like it with this corners.
Re: Kossel Delta xxl build project HELP
January 08, 2019 10:26PM
the top and bottom plates are made from .25" (6.35mm) 6061 aluminum. bed is made from .25" (6.35mm) mic6 aluminum. for the bed do not used standard aluminum plate make sure it is a cast aluminum like mic6, atp5 or alca5.

Thank you.i'll go with 713maker to cut all the plates for me but first i have to build the frame. Your meanwell 150 watt power supply is 12v ? What belts did you use ?
Re: Kossel Delta xxl build project HELP
January 09, 2019 10:39AM
I dunno what the current BOM from dc42's site calls for as far as the length of the extrusions for the top and bottom triangles, but if they're 355mm and you're using those Robotdigg Vertices, take a look at my CAD drawing, I have the frame drawn up and there's a bottom plate that you could use/modify and export it to a .dxf to have a plate cut.

You might also talk to Bill at Precision Waterjet, He Waterjet cut me a disc for my print bed at a really good price.

He also cut me custom top and bottom plates for the new machine I'm working on.

Thank you FA-MAS for your CAD drawing. I'm gonna use Robotdigg Vertices so i should be ok with your plate. How thick they should be for a 1000mm tall printer ?

I'd go with the 1/4" (6.35mm), It's mainly the Vertices that are creating your frame, the plate will help with aligning the bottom triangle and also allow you to mount stuff like the control board, power supply, etc.

What are the lengths of the extrusions in the current BOM, the plate may need to be updated. I think dc42's done some changes since I built the model.

The lengths of the extrusions in the BOM what i have are :
3 x 2040 x 1.0m I-type
3 x 2040 x 390mm I-type
2 x 2060 x 390mm I-type
2 x 2020 x 390mm I-type
David bought the extrusions from Motedis in Europe
I'm gonna need a supplier in USA.
dc42' has an update BOM for XXL delta ?
Thank you

Yeah, I'd have to adjust the bottom plate in my drawing.
Re: Kossel Delta xxl build project HELP
January 09, 2019 01:33PM
Thank you FA-MAS. When you adjust the plate can you send me the file to send it straight to cutting machine ? How about the top plate ?
Re: Kossel Delta xxl build project HELP
January 09, 2019 01:43PM
I didn't draw a specific top plate, you don't really need a plate for the top though. I'll adjust the plate and share the link which will let you download a .dxf file to have the cutters use.

I will say that I modeled the vertices from the drawings from Robotdigg and I double checked against the actual part so my drawing (and bottom plate) should be accurate. But, I haven't had these plates cut. You may want to print the drawing out on paper and "build" the lower triangle on it to make sure it's going to fit correctly. You definitely don't want to have it cut and find out it doesn't fit or the holes are in the wrong place.

Edit: Here you go. Updated the plate, set up for 390mm extrusions. The tab at the bottom, bottom_plate.dxf is the file you want for the cutters. Right click the tab and choose Download.
