Hi.

I'd like want to share with you guys the development of a desktop Scara 3d printer that i have started a few weeks ago.
I call it (for now) the s-maker.

I have created a blog were you can learn a little more about it.

http://www.make-it-3d.eu

Here is a little video showing its first movement :

Please comment. Any feedback is welcome.

Very cool. With the motors powered and not moving does the end effector feel springy at all?

The assemble is quite rigid... will see if enough.

In fact, when i apply pression, what gives a bit is the wheel and not the arm.
The aluminium tubes are 12mm diameter and the joints are small and printed in PLA (more rigid than ABS).

But i'll have to conduct some more tests to see if it's rigid enought for printing.
I am fairly optimistic....smiling smiley

how did you solved firmware issues?will it be open source?

... in the German forum someone suggested that you can rotate your setup, so the arm/head can glide on the bottom (ointing up) and the bed will move in Z.

So you can have any rigidity you want, but have to elevate the bed with the printed objects ...

Really neat design and a very compact motor assembly. I am looking forward to how this one prints.

Looks like very few parts are needed. Can you tell how many so far? How many printed?

@morphos

Nice work!
What firmware, and microcontroller are you using?

I like the static bed for scaling up to a larger build area. This seems like a design that could become an upside-down T, where a mobile bed drives itself into position, and then drives away with the printed part when done. smiling smiley

It's quite identical to Quentin Harley's RepRap Morgan, except that you move the head, while Quentin moves the bed.

I like the principle in your design as well as in Quentin's, because it has so much potential for expansions and improvements, while being inexpensive and simple.

Drawback in your design will be the reduced precision on mid levels of the print, because
- the weight of the arms will bend the z-axis-rods (slightly, but noticeable)
and
- the movement of the arms will cause more tremor on the z-axis.

What I like on Quentins design over yours (excuse me for that, nice work of yours anyway smiling smiley ) is the fixed place of driven components through the print and the reduced amount of moving masses. Only the platform moves up and down, what Quentin uses to balance the slight difference in toolhead-height between folded and unfolded arms (a point that you can integrate in your firmware with no changes to your design, by the way).

Nice build. I like scara robots. smiling smiley

Is there an S-maker machine or kit to be had?

Is it open source?

Where can one get one?
