Hi,

Recently I just started looking around for a laser cutting service. Came across [www.plixo.com.sg]. My question is what is the expected cost for the cutting? Are there more affordable options? What should be a reasonable cost that I should look at? I sent plixo the air 2 dxf files as ask if they could quote me for 10mm acrylic. Their response was very prompt and I should also indicate that their response was professional. They gave me a quote and I am not sure if the amount makes sense.

I am also looking at aluminium frame options.

Appreciate any advice.

Hi Kidearth,

Firstly, you did not stated what is the quoted amt for the 10mm acrylic cut. So we will not know if its a reasonable price or not.
Secondly, aluminium cut is more expensive than acrylic cut.

hi Qsilver2001,

i left out the quoted amount intentionally as i have my considerations. Been digging around and i arrived on the conclusion that the following affects the cost:
a) the base sheet length used to cut the frame
b) the cost of the material, tinting or not potentiall affects the cost as well
c) the surface area of the curves on the frame
d) thickness of material and quality

my original budget for the frame was 50-100. but at moment, it seems quite hard to meet even for 6mm based on those firms i asked

Hi Kidearth,

Yes your budget is on the low side. So have you try getting quotes on other material like plywood etc?
Jus a suggestion, how about using 2 sets x 3mm for the side support with a nut in-between to make it more rigid while the rest using 5mm?
But that you need to adjust/add additional holes on the dxf file and slight longer threaded rods.

If youre not in a big hurry you could order here
Air 2 acrylic frame S$ 118 inc tax ex shipping
as it will be exported you wont have to pay the tax (IVA) which is 21% so that would help with the shipping cost.

Hi Everyone,

thanks for all the input. Finally got my air 2 frame laser cut at Plixo. Decided to go ahead and take the risk. The day I paid, i got a surprise. smiling smiley

Anyway, was told that the acrylic was german import and it felt solid. The components fitted together as designed. Can't complain. I would say worth the money.

Hi bigfilsing,

The surprise was that i only paid 100 when i collected it instead of 200. Think the price reduction might be due to the compact layout i send instead. Because previously i send them 1 file per frame component. Just my speculation though.

Will definitely look at the mods.

It always makes a difference when the get a complete cut sheet so they don't have to spend time arranging things ready for laser cutting.

That's why its always good to ask the size of material sheet and laser cutter bed size.

As you see a bit of time preparing at home can save dollars :-)

Actually 3 reasons for the price dropping to 100:
- optimized drawing as you guessed
- we recently replaced all our mirror and lenses with higher quality ones from new supplier and I can cut around 20% faster
- I was little bit late on this one and being for a personal project, not corporate, I discounted our rate ;-)

Feel free to ask for Reprap forum price if/when you ask for quote, we will charge S$1.50/mn ['student price"] instead of our regular S$2/mn.
