Has anyone mentioned piezo linear motors for tissue stages yet? I saw a demonstration at Parallax, supposedly they can move the stage within a wavelength of red light.

... i have some ten of the first 'piezolegs' and built 2D- and 3D-stages with them.

The simple drivers have only step-propagation, where one single step is around 150 nanometers and varies with load, so you need feedback for better accuracy and precision.

With 'bending' drivers you can move the bars with the same accuracy as with common piezo-stages, what's in the sub-nm range - but here too you need a measuring system for feedback, what's defining the price of the stages ...

Piezo linear motors are being used in cell, tissue, and DNA research; and as Viktor mentions, you pay a price for a feedback system.
It is a great concept, but there are much cheaper alternatives.
