S.O.S! Bioactive glass for bone tissue engineering.

Dear all,

I am currently working on a project that aims to develop bioactive glass-based porous coatings/surfaces for bone tissue engineering. The thickness of the coating is in the range of 100-500 nanometers. The major problem I encountered is that my coatings disappear few hours after putting them in deionized water. However when making the same nano-featured coatings using silica only the coating was stable for almost 2 weeks without remarkable damage!

For experts in bioactive glass for bone tissue Engineering, would you help me understand why the presence of CaO renders the bioactive glass Network unstable in water ? Thank you very much in advance!

The bioactive glass I am using is the binary composition of SiO2 and CaO (70% of SiO2 and 30% of CaO).

Because calcium oxide in water gives calcium hydroxide, which is soluble to some extent? But I guess you probably realised this yourself since asking the question four months ago... :-)
