I'm guessing Nylon won't be good - the grub screw is to hold a shaft in place,
probably, and steel will bite into the shaft better.

Amazon Industrial -> set screws -> M5, M8, etc. Steel set screws. Did they
not have the size we need?

###first draft###
Travers.com has them, under "Metric Socket Set Screws". As I remember,
Travers is is browsable with firefox, but the ordering doesn't work, so you
may need to phone them. KBCtools.com has them as well, on page 769.

McMasters will have them, as well, along with the companies that come up when
you google "fasteners" or "set screws" - fastenal.com has them. (A quick
google suggests that fastenal is a big operator, and is probably reliable.)
###end first draft###

p.s. I imagine if you are ever desperate you can cut the head off a bolt,
grind it smooth, and cut a slot into the top.

What's to stop you, aside from machinery aesthetics, from just using a standard M5 bolt that's longer than that hole it sits in and let the top stick out? :-)

I'm assuming Ed and Adrian had a good reason for specifying the size set
screws they did.

Also, set screws aren't smooth like normal bolt ends, they have cone points,
flattened cone points, etc. etc. - my sleep addled brain glossed over that
bit.

As an aside, have you ever made a drill bit from drill rod? I think it might
be a good way to make the extra long 3 MM drill bits we're going to need now
and then. I think I need some because the 3MM extra long milling bits I
ordered a god-damned month ago haven't arrived yet. #&%!!!!

1/8 inch is 3.175 mm. Why don't you buy one of those in a long length, wrap a couple of thicknesses of wet and dry black sandpaper around the business end and sand it down every so slightly. :-)

Ello!

Yeah, the grubs were suggested to improve aesthetics - and they do! So
it's feasible to replace these with M5 caps with the heads hangin out.
But there's always one... (three in this case) a few need to be grubs
because of the clearances involved.

Damn good point Seb, I've updated the wiki - I used grubs with gnarly
faces which take a real bite into the steel rods.

Yep, that's a must. Cheers for the embedded vid Zach.

The magic words are "long series" applied to drill bits - they make 'em
pretty long...

Best wishes

Long series metric drill bits are kind of hard to come by in the States. I got some 3 mm drill bits to drill the PTFE block I use for a Mk I thermal barrier from a florida firm, IIRC. I only had to drill a 1 inch hole, though.
