One small advantage of double sided for the comms board is that it
gives a big copper area for the power connections. But if we can
preserve that with a single-sided board that would be splendid.

Now that the developer's list is working can we all use that except for
private stuff which'll still go to reprap@bath.ac.uk?

oops! i was still in the habit of sending stuff to the reprap list.

however, after doing the stepper controller board yesterday, i'm
starting to come around to the double sided board. the major problem
i was having with the board is the fact that you have to solder
components to the component side of the board which can be really
tricky, especially for the power connectors.

it would be very trivial to make both pins solder to the copper side,
and then use a via to bring it back to the component side. via's are
easy to do, easy to understand, and very good soldering practice.

now that i'm getting more familiar with Kicad, i'll try and see if i
can make some via's to make that happen for some component side stuff.

Good idea - it'd only need to be done for the hard-to-solder parts,
like the connectors.
