yayayayay! i got some new rs232 chips from mouser... plugged one on, hooked everything up, and... IT WORKED!! this is very good news. it means i'll be rocking and rolling with steppers and extruders later this week.

it also means that the prototype power/comms board works. i'll be doing some final cosmetic stuff to it, then i'll put an order in. i'll also be building and testing both versions of the universal board. once they are fully tested, i'll put an order in for both boards. then we'll be ready to rock!

Congrats, Zach. I remember how I felt when I finally got my first comms card running.

BTW, It's great that you're getting Mike involved in reprap. Some time it would be nice to hear what he's been up to.

Brilliant Zach! Does this mean that your computer is back in the land
of the living, too?

no, i used my linux box at home. the macbook is still in the shop. should be out any day now.

i'll make sure to put a big, red warning in the powercomms page that tells you to get the polarity right (especially if you use a USB adaptor). basically, what happened is 12v went straight up the ground, through the USB adaptor and into the motherboard. very bad.
