feedrate mm/min or mm/second

Hi,

I am actually building my own gcode generator, and I do not understand one thing about speed units. When I use a standard gcode generator program, as Slic3r, you set the speed in mm/s; however, when you check the gcode, the feedrate is set in mm/min (the feedrate value is multiplied by 60). And what it was really surprising for me, Marlin code take the speed value and divide it by 60, coming back to mm/second.

Why is the feedrate converted from mm/sec to mm/min??

Thank you very much!!

Antonio

I can't speak to why Marlin does it that way but it is convention to have gcode written in units/min. Since 3D printers are so much faster than machines we originally used gcode on it makes a lot of sense to talk in terms of units/sec when we are defining parameters for a slicer. For good or bad we are stuck with this gcode standard.
