Gus Simpson Status

Hello, I've recently been interested in working on the Gus Simpson printer because it looks really cool and i'm pretty sure the project is abandoned. I know that there are multiple iterations of it and that some people have taken different routes with it. I am wondering if anyone in here knows about what happened to the project or any other useful information that could help me improve upon it.

What about the printer made it not worth pursuing?

i can comment on it having built 2 gus simpsons 1.5 ( not the original but the one with the pulleys ) Yes it is buildable and prints very well but calibration is a PITA . also it is very silent. So if you are upto the chalange do it .It can never be a practical a go to printer as it is again i say hard to calibrate!
