extruder switched off maxtemp triggered
December 02, 2014 11:58PM
Printer:
Mendel90
Ubis Hot End

Electronics:
Arduino Mega2560 with a RAMPS 1.4 shield.

Software:
Repetier-Host

Problem:
I connect my board via USB. I lunch Repetier Host. I connect. I get error 0: extruder switched off maxtemp triggered.

Additional Information:
Error happens with everything plugged into the board or with nothing plugged in. Leads me to believe it has something to do with a configuration.

There is another post regarding this on this forum however it does not provide a solution or steps.

All help is appreciated.

Our thermistors are usually NTC, negative temperature coefficient. As them goes up, resistance goes down. Maxtemp would indicate very low resistance, possibly indicating a short. However with everything unplugged, that's less likely but it still could be a problem with the RAMPS board. Check the solder joints to make sure there isn't any stray solder bridges. Also double check that your config files are correct and using the right pins.

Alright, I did not realize that the Marlin firmware needed to be configure (configuration.h) before uploading onto the board. As you confirmed, the Ubis hot end uses a 100K Negative Temperature Coefficient thermistor.

Now I need help selecting the correct thermistor in the configuartion.h file, here are my options:

//// Temperature sensor settings:
// -2 is thermocouple with MAX6675 (only for sensor 0)
// -1 is thermocouple with AD595
// 0 is not used
// 1 is 100k thermistor - best choice for EPCOS 100k (4.7k pullup)
// 2 is 200k thermistor - ATC Semitec 204GT-2 (4.7k pullup)
// 3 is Mendel-parts thermistor (4.7k pullup)
// 4 is 10k thermistor !! do not use it for a hotend. It gives bad resolution at high temp. !!
// 5 is 100K thermistor - ATC Semitec 104GT-2 (Used in ParCan & J-Head) (4.7k pullup)
// 6 is 100k EPCOS - Not as accurate as table 1 (created using a fluke thermocouple) (4.7k pullup)
// 7 is 100k Honeywell thermistor 135-104LAG-J01 (4.7k pullup)
// 71 is 100k Honeywell thermistor 135-104LAF-J01 (4.7k pullup)
// 8 is 100k 0603 SMD Vishay NTCS0603E3104FXT (4.7k pullup)
// 9 is 100k GE Sensing AL03006-58.2K-97-G1 (4.7k pullup)
// 10 is 100k RS thermistor 198-961 (4.7k pullup)
// 11 is 100k beta 3950 1% thermistor (4.7k pullup)
// 12 is 100k 0603 SMD Vishay NTCS0603E3104FXT (4.7k pullup) (calibrated for Makibox hot bed)
// 13 is 100k Hisens 3950 1% up to 300°C for hotend "Simple ONE " & "Hotend "All In ONE"
// 20 is the PT100 circuit found in the Ultimainboard V2.x
// 60 is 100k Maker's Tool Works Kapton Bed Thermistor beta=3950
//
// 1k ohm pullup tables - This is not normal, you would have to have changed out your 4.7k for 1k
// (but gives greater accuracy and more stable PID)
// 51 is 100k thermistor - EPCOS (1k pullup)
// 52 is 200k thermistor - ATC Semitec 204GT-2 (1k pullup)
// 55 is 100k thermistor - ATC Semitec 104GT-2 (Used in ParCan & J-Head) (1k pullup)
//
// 1047 is Pt1000 with 4k7 pullup
// 1010 is Pt1000 with 1k pullup (non standard)
// 147 is Pt100 with 4k7 pullup
// 110 is Pt100 with 1k pullup (non standard)

I selected:

// 8 is 100k 0603 SMD Vishay NTCS0603E3104FXT (4.7k pullup)

and uploaded the firmware. Once connected to the board in Repetier-Host it now gives me this error:

extruder switched off mintemp triggered

Any ideas which other thermistor it might be? Because I should not be prevented from moving the motors since it is at 0 degrees. Another possible setting in the configuration.h file?

I can almost guarantee you that you don't have #8. 0603 SMD is a surface mount form factor size. The Ubis looks to have a glass bead. 1 and 6 are very popular, but honestly unless you know for sure many of them might be close, but might not. I found a reference that said the Ubis thermistor looked identical to an EPCOS, but it wasn't very authoritative and looks can be deceiving so I wouldn't rely on it. If you have a thermocouple you could generate your own table by measuring what temperature the hot end is and measuring the resistance. 3 points is all that's needed to generate the curve.

Are you getting any reading as to the temperature? It should be 18+/- degrees C depending on room temperature. If it reads zero (and you aren't in a freezer), then min temp was triggered because it's an open circuit. Just as very low resistance measures maxtemp, very high resistance (or infinite resistance aka open) measures as mintemp.

I had someone else on the printrbot forum confirm that it is a EPCOS 100k thermistor (#1). I went ahead and change that in the configuration.h file and reloaded the firmware. It triggered the mintemp error again. So as you suggest that it is open circuit, I went ahead and plugged in the thermistor. It is reading the proper temperature of the hot end. Thank you for your help.

Now to deal with other issues, some motors are moving and others are just making noise. I am sure it is another configuration. I will look into that later before opening another thread.

Adjust pots on drivers, presuming that they turn by hand without significant resistance or binding when not powered.
