Fried some electronic's but which ones ???
February 25, 2015 03:38PM
Hey guys,

Tonight I was using a multimeter to set the voltages on my stepstick drivers, I think I mixed up some wires or accidentally touched some connections, but suddenly my computer switched off. Then i reset the computer ( thinking my battery died or something) but as soon as i plugged the usb connection back in my laptop it turned off again. Next i unplugged the arduino mega 2560 from the ramps board and did an open-loop test on the board which it failed, so i believe i have fried the board. My question now is how do I know if I have fried any of the stepper drivers or the RAMPS board itself ???

Sorry for the lack of information as I am unsure what to say...

Many Thanks,

Fintan

Remove all the stepper drivers and power up. If it doesn't power up, you know you damaged the RAMPs itself. If it comes up successfully, power down and add one stepper driver and power up again Add one at a time until you see the failure.

Do NOT connect or disconnect either a driver or a motor while power is on as this will most likely kill the driver.

Have you tried the ardiuno itself with the PC? Since it's hte USB connection that's bringing your PC down, and since the RAMPS has no USB circuitry on it, I'm skeptical of the arduino itself.

When I tried the arduino itself, the power light came on but it will not accept any code / fails open-loop test / does not connect to prontorface ( although unsure if it should or not when not connected to ramps ), my major issue is I know i need to replace the Mega board, but how do i tell if any of the other circuitry needs replacing, (without blowing another mega) ???
