I've got me myself a little problem with my RAMPS 1.4 runinng Marlin-1.0.2-1 and 2004 LCD Intelligent Smart Controller (RepRapDiscount Smartcontroller, this one ebay) can get it to display temp etc. but do i use the button, the display gets weird

it is a hardware problem with the encoder, or a software problem?

Could be cold solder or bad crimp contacts. I had some hiccups in my display from turning the encoder to fast, but after pushing the knob, it refreshed.

Is the problem consistently happening every time you press the button?
To use a technical term, have you tried wiggling the cables a bit to see if you
do have dodgy joint on one of the boards?

Or you could just resolder all the joints.
