Ramps 1.4 and A4988 voltage question Newbie
October 30, 2015 07:18PM
hi guys,

I am a newbie working on building a 2d printer using a arduino mega , ramps 1.4 and 5 A4988 stepper drivers to run the dvd stepper motors. i have everything setup to test the axis's but am running into a problem, when powering the stepper which is a salvaged dvd 4 wire stepper motor I get a high pitched noise out of the ramps 1.4. I am assuming it is the a4988 not being adjusted to power the stepper. also I get a jerky movement not smooth when moving the motor and it gets very hot. so my questions are what voltages if measuring on the A4988 pot should I be looking for to limit the heat and the noise of the motor.should I be looking for current or voltage. I have the ardunio and ramps setup to use a pc power supply and am using the bottom two connectors on the power supply, I also have the jumpers installed under the A4988.

You should regulate the Vref of the drivers to reduce current. With such small motors, I would start at 0.1V.
