I burned Arduino on ramps 1.6 - Dunno why...
February 06, 2022 05:21AM
I am doing my 3D printer project.

i wanted to set on my 3d printer bl-touch.  i short  vcc 5v with jumper on mega 1.6. The board turned off immediately and my arduino just burned in 3 sec.

Can someone explain what I did wrong ? confused smileyconfused smiley

There must be a short on the 5v servo rail somewhere.

check resistance from 5v pin to gnd

I checked the resistance and it is 0 zero .
Seems like something is wrong right?
What could it be? confused smiley

that is very wrong

the 5v pin should only connect to 5v pins on servo plug

There is either a pcb fault, for a solder bridge somewhere.

Finding it will be nearly impossible

From this thread

[reprap.org]

These boards seem to have a design fault

Thanks for info. is somewere avalable Ramps 1.6 PCB DESIGN ? i wanna follow where is 5V trace going...eye rolling smiley

Is that 1.6 ramps are broken ? or just every ramps is the same?

only that brand of 1.6 that I know of. I have not had this issue with ramp 1.4's

take a high res image of bottom of 1.6 see if anything is obvious

... if it's onla a "small" short, you can try to locate it by high "overcurrent" -- maybe it will burn/explode the short, so you can see where ...

... is the PCB 2- or 4-layers?

at the back of the reset switch and under the servo plugs you can clearly see the trace that is the 5v line.

But it looks like that trace goes to one of the gnded mounting pins of the reset switch (but the image is not very clear in that area)

I will never buy Arduino ramps anymore for 3D printers. I have my own project and I wanted to just test on cheap board, but I spent more than 32 bit proper boards . and it was only pain...

Ramps 1.6 are so broken. and it is not happening only to me. I see many people have the same issue.

Im fairly sure its 2 layers. Most ramps are

is that better?

ok so it is not gnded there.. was just the picture.

If this was my board, I would cut the track on the red line as pictured

Then test which side has the short to gnd, Either the +5v pin on the servo plug end or just the vcc/5v jumper end.

give you an idea where to look.

If short is not on the servo plugs side I would just ignore it. (apart from curiosity)
then all you need to do is connect +5v on the servo plug to any vcc nearby with a jumper wire.

If the short is on the servo end... next step would be to un solder the servo pins and examine what is on the top of the pcb under the where the pins where

i am planing to unsolder everything as possible.

i will post new images later.

thank for helping and advice..thumbs upsmileys with beer

I desoldered the whole board and its sanded now . grinning smiley

and i think i found why 5V and Ground have shorts..

I think there is a short where I highlighted.

Over kill, but nice!

Yes that looks like the short to me. and a bad one.

Cutting the track like I suggested should work, or drill out that via.

Can I use your images?, ill add a note to the reprap wiki about this issue

I cut already this track on this board and everything is okay.

Its not as prominent as I would like, but the markup laguage was really fighting with me..
