I have sent directions and details for the South west event on the 14th July to 12 people, if you have not got the details PM me and I'll send them over.

Looking forward to seeing you all there for a great day RepRapping!

And I forgot to say if you have a deckchair you can bring along, please do, we will be short of about 4 seats at the moment.

Cheers,

Rich.

Hi,

Having read about Stewart's get together in Exeter on the 28th July I am very keen on attending but as I am not mobile these days would need someone to give me a lift there and back.

I live in the EX20 area, about 25 miles from Exeter very close to Dartmoor so if you think you might be able to help please PM me for more details.

Hopefully it goes without saying I will make a healthy contribution to your fuel costs...

Also, as I have asthma you would need to be a non smoker!

Thanking you in anticipation of a positive outcome...

Hello everyone,

Just found this thread, thought I would check out the community since I have just finished building a Huxley. These meet ups sound quite useful so I shall have a quick dig through the recent posts to find out what's on and if I can make any. Otherwise, just interjecting to say hello and that I am looking forward to attending future events.

That's all for now I reckon.

Regards,
Mac

G'day Mac! Welcome to the thread.

As you'll read above, RichRap is organising the next event this Saturday 14th July in Stroud from 11am until late.

Anyone interested in joining us - 12 or so at last count - will need to PM him for address details.

Look forward to meeting you Sat if you can make it, otherwise the next events are:
Exeter - Sat 28th July
Newport - Sun 26th August

Also, you are welcome to throw down a date and place any time you want to host a meeting yourself. We've certainly reached critical mass now and someone WILL turn up if you post a date and place. Have a look back at pics from previous events.

Edit: Newport day / date corrected.

Cheers Hamish for the summary of meet ups,

I'm afraid I cannot attend this Saturday, have been roped into attending some form of fair. However, I should be free to attend the one in Exeter for the 28th (conveniently close as I live in Minehead). Until then I shall try and get my Huxley fully calibrated and start on convincing my Raspberry Pi to communicate with it.

Mac

All still on for tomorrow, looking forward to it.

Let me know when you get there or call if you get stuck/lost.

We will need to unload cars and then park outside of the estate to avoid annoying people.

And think of me tomorrow, I will be starting our Chilli at 7:00AM tomorrow as it takes all day to cook smiling smiley

Cheers,

Rich.

Looking forward tomorrow, can you give lessons on 3D printers and cooking Chili.

Bringing my machine, but have just noticed the RAMP 1.3 board stepper motor are RED, BLUE, GREEN, BLACK ( 2B,2A,1A,1B )
and my motor leads are four other colours, thus i am trying to find out which is pin one or which two wires make a pair. All part of the fun !

See you tomorrow

Thanks for organising this Rich. It was good to meet you and see every one else. Sorry we couldn't stay for the chilli. It smelled good and I hope it went down well.

Great day out Rich!, good to meet you all and thanks everyone for all the assistance, lots learned but lots more to learn too!

Looking forward to the next event and will in due course arrange one at my unit too, cant promise the same expert preparation of a chilli of course but I'll think of something - Spag Bol?

Rich let me know when you want to re-make your specialist extruder, I'll get on with the more mundane ones in the meantime.

Cheers

Nick

Hi,

Thanks Rich for organising a great meetup, its always interesting to see what people have been up to and explore where we all want to go with this,
As always a bare minimum of actual printing was completed smiling smiley

I got home and did something mad to consolidate many of my thoughts (becoming a bit or a ritual), in this case 4 hours or cad just about did the trick!

Just Re-configured X axis level & Z 0 and retrying my gears, (fingers crossed)

Thanks again for the meetup Rich,

Its really good to see so many people taking up the baton and offering to hose a meetup.

Thanks to all for making our meeting a great experience and in particular Rich who sorted out a place to meet, cooked a very tasty meal thumbs up(we all had seconds!) and once again was able to help many of us by passing on his in-depth knowledge

Equally good to see the group of five from our 1st meeting and to see how their machines and knowledge is progressing and of course a few new members

On a personal level thanks for sorting out some technical problems which will save me many hours. This is one reason why these meetings are very important, quick problem solving compared with working alone in one’s workshop (thinking am I making the correct step forward etc. ?)

I look forward to the next meeting and to see the progress we are all making and to see what Rich and Hamish have been up to with their machines.

Many thanks indeed Rich - for the fine location and fine food! (The seconds went down especially well.)

It's great to see everyone progressing so well - even if that progress at an individual level seems to take so long at times.

When I attended our first event in Bristol last year, I just wanted to get my Prusa working nicely. I never gave it a thought that these meet-ups might also provide the opportunity to discuss all kinds of interesting engineering issues and throw around a wide range of ideas around over a cuppa; all with a bunch of really knowledgeable people from a diverse range of backgrounds. For that alone, I'm very grateful to be a part of this community - and excited about its future.

I look forward to catching up, and meeting more new faces, in Exeter on the 28th July and Newport on 26th August.

If someone (yep, even you, dear lurker) wants to grab a date and host an event in September - that would be really awesome. smiling smiley (BTW, for anyone thinking of hosting an event, while I don't speak for anyone other than myself, I think it would be fair to say that after a casual chat about it, we're each prepared to chip in towards cost of food and hire of a location, should it be necessary.)

Cheers,
Hamish

Thanks everyone, what a grand day, I had a lot of fun. smileys with beer It was really fantastic to see so many of you with great machines, ideas, designs and printed objects.

We seem to be making wonderful progress with all our plans for machine changes, developments and improvements, I can't wait to see everyones upgrades next time.

Thanks for the thought and contemplation on my experimental extruder issues confused smiley I have now made up another hot-end assembly and should get around to testing it this week thumbs up - then maybe a more ambitious machined version can be made up smiling smiley (Thanks Nick).

Looking forward to more of the same next time. And if anyone needs any help organising one of these events, It sounds like everyone's happy to chip in to cover any costs, or bring along equipment to help. I have two nice folding tables now and so many power adapters, happy to bring along to future events.

I'm more than convinced that we all need portable machines now smiling smiley

Cheers,

Rich.

Exeter Event
July 20, 2012 07:56AM
Hi

It's really interesting to find this forum - I'd be very interested in meeting up and am wondering about the details of the Exeter event next weekend, which I can't find...is there a link to a location and timing?

I'm building an ABS Prusa Mendel from thereprapkitstore and have found the forum discussions about that extremely helpful, as the kit itself is less than complete.

The 28th is fast approaching and I am still waiting with fingers crossed for someone who might be kind enough to transport me between EX20 and Stewart's place.

As I said I will contribute generously towards the cost of fuel.

Realised I should probably let you all know that I am still alive, and confirm that everything is still good for this weekend.

As there is a hard finish time of 7:30pm (else we risk getting locked in the building) I am still deciding on what to do with regards to food. I have lunch organised, but depending on what time people leave I think a take away of some sort will likely have to do for dinner!

There is plenty of parking available on site, and once you do arrive you'll need to go to reception (it's the door on the front of the building, not the side) and use the intercom there to dial my unit - Printed Worlds. (I forget the exact number, but I'll make sure there is a sheet out with it on.)

I look forward to seeing you all soon!

Many thanks for hosting yesterday's meeting, Stewart. Good to meet some other builders and aspiring builders!

I had another play with my machine last night, and have decided that temp control is not good enough (I think that I am printing at slightly too high a temp, but the hot end temp varies +-5C which I think is too much) and the heater block is much too close to the object being printed which aggravates the situation. I need to do some PID tuning, and make a new nozzle with more extension from the heater block. Plus a fan on the carriage, maybe. Also need to sort out the Z axis couplers so that the wobbly leadscrews don't have so much effect. Still happy with where I am after only a few weeks of having "finished" the Prusa but I suspect that "Finished" with a big "F" is still some way away. Sessions like yesterday's are great for picking up suggestions and short-cutting some of the trial and error experimenting.

Have now connected bed thermistor although it's only reading room temp at present - too busy playing to find some wire for the heater PCB! Thanks for connector shells - it's a 50 mile round trip to Plymouth Maplin otherwise.

Thanks to everyone that made their way to Exeter yesterday!

For those that are interested I'm quite happy to host meetups again in the future. I have plenty of cake recipes, so I can make sure you get a different lunch each time!
Re: Contacts info for a get together

Good to see you had a great turnout in Exeter!

Apologies for having to bale out on the morning - but I look forward to joining in some other baking day. smiling smiley

Brian - FWIW, are you aware Maplin do mail order?
Also, I'd suggest you work towards eliminating the Z-axis wobble than accommodating it with a coupler. It took me some time - by running the Z-axis motors + threaded rods, in situ, but WITHOUT the z-axis nuts. That way you get a pretty good idea of what needs moving - the motor or the threaded rod in the coupler. Of course, it helps to start with straight threaded rod. Are you using nophead's couplers? I've found them to be very good.
Bottom line: My z-axes threaded rods are well enough aligned that both z-axis motors are screwed in tight to their mounts.

Cheers,

Hamish
