Just pinging the local forum again.

Great meeting all of you!

Oh, and Sublime, you were right about the ceramic elements in the hair straighteners. There is a fancy temperature controlled element in there that is _perfect_, so I machined up an aluminum bed and will be testing it as soon as I get some new #4 countersunk screws to mount it.

I can't take credit. [forums.reprap.org]

I was inspired by Johns prints and got my prusa going this morning and its first print was as good as my last RepStrap print.

This is the perf board trick I was mentioning for printing ABS without a heated bed. [www.thingiverse.com]

@Gonzo 007

We are planning on having another meet up. When is up to everyone involved, including yourself now.

Where are you located?

Hey Brad; another followup on the heated bed;

Your suggestion for ceramic hair straightener elements is working AMAZINGLY well. The ceramic heaters magically converge on the 120C temperature.... once I hooked them to the new aluminum bed I milled last night grinning smiley There are really only two usable settings on the thermostat, either 65-70C or 120-125C flat out. It seems to oscillate a bit in between. Getting some great prints out, although I have a way to go before my prints are rivaling John's for dimensional perfection.

I am located in Newton, Surrey. Like I said in my earlier post. I am still in the planning stages of the build. I also found out one of my co workers has a makerbot and is willing to print me some parts. Looking forward to learning more about these units.

If I have notice I can arrange to meet most week nights.

Be sure to let Chase82 know how it worked for you [forums.reprap.org] one of the things the admin are trying to do is stop development happening in the local group forums.

Brad

To everyone
Do we want to have meetings every two or three weeks instead of once a month?

Glad to hear more people are getting involved. If you need any help or other parts just ask. If you are in a hurry there are a few sets of parts already printed from group members.

Correction; the elements only worked for a day or so per set, then burned out. The nichrome is amazingly thin and weak, and temperature cycling it killed it in a few hours. Don't use ceramic heaters from hair straighteners, go buy a $20 Black and Decker iron instead, which is working awesome with 16 hours of solid on/off and printing (longer term reliability to follow).

With October quickly approaching I thought I'd drop by here and check on what the situation was like for everyone in terms of availability for meet dates/times. I think going on a month to month/bi-weekly basis with various times is decent it would be good to set a day and time (if this was to continue, which it should) that reoccurs would be better choice in the long run as it allows everyone to pre-plan events or foresee a possible conflict coming up and come up with creative ways to still make the meet.

I agree a set schedule would make things easier for most people. And we really should have discussed that when we were together. But we didn't.

Wednesday worked well last time and if no one has any objections we can make it for the second Wednesday of October (12th) and unless anyone has come up with a better location we can go to BP on the by-pass again.

If this does not work for anyone I am available Wednesday nights and weekends.

We will definitely have to work on finding a location where we can have a machine running for future meetings.

Either is good. Perhaps we should carpool from Abby?

same here 2nd Wednesday works quite well actually. If that works for people then I think the only thing now is finding a location that's more reprap machine friendly and that can be the designated place to meet

Glad to hear from you.

Hi, I saw a Mendel in the V&A in London last week and I am keen to learn more about how I can build one for myself. I am more of a woodworker by hobby but I would like to use a Prusa to model parts for hidden lock mechanisms and mechanical puzzles in wood projects. I have little experience with electronics, but I used to use AutoCad 13, (reverent silence for ancient software please). I also have a whole boat-load of questions like, "Why RepRap instead of one of the other platforms that I see on the web?", but they are probably better answered in real time. I do need to see one in action before I commit to building my own. The meeting at BP on the 12th is doable; I live in Burnaby. If I could meet with someone to see a machine in action, that would be fantastic.

Hello Paul,

You are more than welcome to come to the next meeting and we will be happy to share our experiences and knowledge. We will also have a variety of prints you can look at.

Just out of curiosity does anyone have any dupont 2 and 3 pin connectors? Im just switching over from gen3 to ramps and need some connectors for the thermister and endstops. checked a few places in langley and no one had the dupont ones anything bigger is really hard to get in between the endstop pins. If anyone has some bring them to the meet please! smiling smiley

I'll check them out and see what they have as I was going to go there for some grub screws and nuts didnt think they would sell the dupont connectors as well. I found the ones they sold at SMI were meant for computers and are roughly 2x the size of the pins on the endstop and are white/beige in color. As always thanks Brad for the suggestion.

Last minute reminder! See you all tonight.

Paul its too bad you wont be making it tonight, as of right now we usually meet on the 2nd Wednesday of every month unless something changes. So most likely the next one will be Nov.9th. I've been thinking about an online place for us to meet, somewhere that would allow us to still communicate with each other in much more "real time" than forums, possibly via IRC or other mediums. This would allow us to answer any on the spot questions about reprap software/hardware/firmware as well as any questions that new comers would want to ask when they cant come to the meet.
