Strain gauges are resistive sensors with high impedance and high sensitivity.
Their electronic conditioning requires specific characteristics. For example, sensors with high impedance can be tricky for classical ADC and multiplexer whose leakage current is around some μA.
The analogic acquisition must satisfy the following characteristics:
- High impedance input
- Ability to handle low currents (from 1nA to 10μA)
- Bias voltage between 1V to 5V
- High impedance range especially for high strain range measurement
You need a high impedance first stage to handle the measurement of high impedance sensors. Several solutions exist:
- Use instrumentation amplifier with high impedance buffer (such as OPA365 or APO320)
- Perform a current measurement instead of a resistance measurement (with logarithmic amplifier for example)
However, all the techniques than can measure a high resistance or a small current can be used
