Anyone know what the root cause of this is? It's not a gradual layer shift so I'm not sure what went wrong

A general rule is:
small shift = skipped steps
big shifts = overheated driver in temperature protection mode

thanks, so i should try to improve my cooling? Bigger cooling fan for the board?

Usually a normal fan is enough to cool the drivers. I'd start checking the Vref of the driver and try to reduce it. Also check for mechanical problems like cheap linear bearings or wires potentionally blocking motions.

after shifting the drivers around i can say for certain it is one driver in particular that is causing this problem, I'll just replace itand see?

If this is a newly built printer, try turning down the acceleration.

If it used to work fine and this is a new problem, it may be the driver or an intermittent cable.
